Frequent Questions

What are future plans for the Substance Registry System (SRS)?

As EPA systems modernize, EPA is looking at how these EPA programs can utilize SRS Web services to improve data quality, while reducing costs.  SRS is a key component of EPA's Shared Services, which is the idea of many EPA programs using a centralized service.

For example, some EPA programs use SRS Web services to help industry, state, or tribal representative when they fill out on line reporting forms.  Instead of typing in a chemical name, which can be prone to typing errors, the representative can enter a substance name or other identifier; the SRS Web services then provides results that match that search.  The representative then selects the correct substance.  This ensures that there are no spelling errors or other errors.
